Often, conviction and transformation come swifter when the message is communicated with a sober tone and spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bible gives us multiple admonitions to be sober.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it&#8217;s true that the <strong>spiritual depth of a song isn&#8217;t necessarily in its genre, beat, or tempo<\/strong>, we must admit something important: certain styles\u2014like Afro-gospel or rap gospel\u2014<strong>may take longer to bring about transformation<\/strong> in a listener. It&#8217;s not that they lack power or truth, but because their delivery often emphasizes rhythm and energy, people may get caught up in the &#8220;vibe&#8221; and miss the message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not limited to Afrobeat or contemporary styles. <strong>Even in more traditional or choral settings<\/strong>, I\u2019ve observed the same tendency. As someone who has served as music director for several choirs, I\u2019ve had to correct choristers who allowed their <strong>vocal flair or musical expression to overshadow the message<\/strong>\u2014causing the congregation to be <strong>moved emotionally<\/strong> but <strong>miss the spiritual core<\/strong> of the song. So the real issue is not just about genre\u2014it\u2019s about when <strong>sobriety is removed from worship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This dynamic is also seen in secular music. Many enjoy the rhythm of Afrobeat and only later realize the lyrics are filled with problematic messages. Likewise, in gospel music, a person can vibe to a song for months without truly hearing the Word within it. Such songs can be powerful for <strong>edification<\/strong> and <strong>joy in the faith<\/strong>, but they are <strong>not always the most effective tools for evangelism<\/strong>, where clarity and conviction are paramount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On its best day<\/strong>, these kinds of songs <strong>can carry a true message<\/strong>, but the musical energy <strong>can still delay the impact<\/strong>. And <strong>on its worst day<\/strong>, especially when gospel artists simply remix secular songs, we\u2019ve seen these songs <strong>communicate carnality rather than Christ<\/strong>\u2014dulling the power of the gospel and confusing the line between holy and profane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bible speaks <strong>loudly and repeatedly about sobriety<\/strong> (1 Peter 5:8, Titus 2:2, 1 Thessalonians 5:6). Sobriety focuses the heart and mind. When a song is delivered soberly\u2014be it through melody, minimal instrumentation, or a more contemplative tone\u2014listeners are less distracted and more likely to reflect on the lyrics. These are often the songs that stir repentance and true transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, while I have nothing against Afro-gospel or rap\u2014I enjoy and appreciate them\u2014we should not overlook this other side of the truth. <strong>If our goal is to transform lives through music, sobriety is not just helpful\u2014it is vital.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Benjamin Babine The gospel of Christ thrives more in sobriety than in hype or entertainment.
