\u201cTherefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.\u201d<\/strong>
\u2014 Ephesians 5:1 (ESV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our anchor text gives us a profound instruction: as God\u2019s dearly loved children, we are called to imitate Him.<\/em> The Greek word translated as \u201cimitators\u201d is mim\u0113t\u0113s<\/em>, from which we get the English word \u201cmimic.\u201d This goes beyond simply following God\u2014it means reflecting His character in our daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is exactly how Jesus lived during His earthly ministry. He said, \u201cThe Son can do nothing by Himself; He can do only what He sees His Father doing, because whatever the Father does, the Son also does.\u201d<\/em> (John 5:19, NKJV). Jesus modeled perfect obedience and imitation of the Father, and now we are called to walk in His steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The very first way we are told to imitate God is by walking in love. Paul continues in Ephesians 5:2, \u201cWalk in love, as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us.\u201d<\/em> The greatest proof that we are children of God is not in lofty words but in walking in the same love that moved Christ to give Himself for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus raised the standard of love even higher in Matthew 5:43\u201348, where He commanded us to love not only our friends but even our enemies. God shows His love without discrimination\u2014sending rain on the righteous and the unrighteous\u2014and we are to do likewise. To imitate God is to love like Him, to forgive like Him, and to show kindness even when it is undeserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou have heard that it was said, \u2018Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.\u2019 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? – Matthew 5:43\u201346 (NIV) <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As His children, we have both the privilege and responsibility of reflecting His nature to the world. We cannot do this in our own strength, but by the Holy Spirit working in us, we are daily transformed into His likeness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prayer<\/strong>
