Discipleship Devotional, January 24th, 2025

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.
– 1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)

Conviction is one thing that is very necessary in our Christian walk. A lot of believers are tossed to and fro by every idea and philosophy that goes around. Every false teaching shakes them. When atheists spew their false ideologies about Christ, they easily fall for it. When the world throws their false ideologies on marriage, they take it. They fall for just anything. This is not the will of God.

God wants all of us to be strong in our convictions. This is what today’s devotional seeks to teach. How then do we build our convictions? The most important way to build convictions is by meditating on God’s Word. Convictions are built by what we meditate on. Some are convicted of wrong ideas. This is because they have given their minds to it for a long time.

We also must give time to the Word of God if we will have conviction. On any subject in life, we must build our conviction from God’s Word. Another way to strengthen our conviction is through prayer.

When we pray, particularly with the Word of God that we have studied, the Holy Spirit helps to digest the Word into us. Paul, speaking to the Thessalonian church, spoke about how the Holy Spirit produced conviction in them when they heard the gospel.

For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction.
– 1 Thessalonians 1:4-5 (NIV)

It is a lack of conviction that makes believers relocate to another country and become atheists. It is a lack of conviction that makes us walk into sin. If a believer is convicted that God will take care of them, provide for them, and bless the work of their hands, that believer will not go into vices like internet fraud, prostitution, etc., for the sake of money. So conviction also preserves us from walking in sin.

Admonition:
Therefore, today I urge you to make it a goal to build your convictions in Christ. You will be much better for it.
