\u201cI am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.\u201d<\/strong> In John 15, Jesus gives a powerful illustration about the importance of abiding in Him. He uses the metaphor of a vine and branches, with Himself as the vine and us as the branches. The main message He shares is that fruitfulness in our lives is directly connected to our relationship with Him. In verse 2, Jesus says that every branch in Him that does not bear fruit will be taken away. But why would a branch be taken away? The next verses give us the full picture:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAbide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. With these successive verses, Jesus gives us a clearer picture of why a branch may not bear fruit and why it is taken away. The answer is abiding in Him. Christ calls us to stay connected to Him (who is the vine) because that\u2019s the only way we can bear godly fruit. What this tells us is that it’s not enough to just claim you are a believer\u2014that\u2019s as good as simply claiming you are a branch. We are called, in our daily walk, to abide in Christ. Importantly, the next verses also show us what it means to abide in Christ:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIf ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.\u201d<\/strong> So we can clearly see that abiding in Christ is living in accordance with His word, His instructions, and His commandments. When a person stops living according to His word, he or she has stopped abiding. And it is only a matter of time before they begin to dry up. Any branch that refuses to stay connected to the vine, which is the source of life, will eventually die. Without this connection to the vine, we can do nothing. As verse 6 makes clear, the branch that does not remain in the vine will wither, and eventually, it will be removed, just like a dead branch cast into the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the opposite is also true: when we keep His commandments and live according to His word, we will bear fruit. The more we stay rooted in His Word, the more fruit we produce\u2014not just for ourselves but also for others and for His Kingdom. Our lives become a reflection of His love, and our actions become aligned with His purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Today, God\u2019s word admonishes us to stay connected to the vine so that we can be fruitful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Holy Spirit, help me to abide in Christ every day. Help me to live according to His word so that I will bear fruit.
