Discipleship Devotional, May 13th, 2025<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.<\/strong>
\u2014 Matthew 15:5-6 (NIV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our anchor text today, Jesus challenged the Pharisees about how they had perverted the commandments of God. The law instructed for children to honour their parents with their substance, but the Pharisees had created a loophole that told people they can afford to ignore their responsibility of taking care of their parents as long as the money is given as an “offering.” They did not do this because they cared much about the work of God. They did this simply because of their greed to collect more money from the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can see that this still happens today. Firstly, I must say that the Bible also clearly instructs us to be financially committed to the church; however, this does not justify neglecting our parents (and family). There are those today who will not pay their children’s fees but will take all their money to church. This is a very irresponsible and ungodly behavior that should have no place in our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I once heard of a fellow whose wife was heavily pregnant, yet he carried all his money to church while she was forced to beg people for money to eat. This is not the way of God. This is evil. When we practice the scriptures properly, we will find that there is order in everything we do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.<\/strong>
\u2014 1st Timothy 5:8 (NKJV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we live our lives in this way, we are not following God no matter how devoted we seem to be. We are following the hypocrisy of the Pharisees. This is not the will of God for our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
