Discipleship Devotional, June 4th, 2025
I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
– Ephesians 4:1 (KJV)
Salvation in Christ Jesus is a high calling that God has extended to the whole world. This salvation is totally by the grace of God, and all we had to do to receive it is believe in Christ. We played no part in making it happen. It has nothing to do with our good works or our self-righteousness (which Scripture says is a filthy rag before God).
So in salvation, we were basically called out of darkness into the light of Christ. We were called out from being children of the devil to becoming children of God. This is such a high calling that automatically bestows on us a responsibility to walk worthy of that calling.
What does this mean? It simply means now that we have received this glorious salvation, we must henceforth conduct ourselves in a manner that is worthy of this calling. Yes, we are saved by grace, not because of our works, but after that salvation, we were made new creations with God’s righteous nature—hence we can do good works.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
– Ephesians 2:8 (KJV)
If you notice this passage above, the Apostle Paul establishes that we are saved by grace alone through faith (believing) and not by our works. He, however, goes on to tell us that after that salvation, we have now been recreated (as New Creations in Christ) unto good works. This means though we were not saved by our good works, we have now been given a new nature that can live worthy of this salvation. This is glorious.
So consequently, we see this spelt out in several passages for us to live a life worthy of the high calling we have received in Christ. Let’s see some of these verses below:
As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.

Prayer
Holy Spirit, help me walk in a manner that is consistent with Christ. Help me live my life in a way that helps others see the Lord Jesus.
