How to Bear Godly Fruit

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.”
— John 15:4 (KJV)

As a believer, bearing godly fruit is not something you can accomplish through your own strength. If it were, there would be no need for the generous sacrifice of our Lord Jesus. The truth is that we are so limited in ourselves that the only way we can truly please God is if He helps and empowers us.

In our anchor text, Jesus clearly explains how to bear godly fruit. He is the vine, and we are the branches. No branch can bear fruit by itself—it must stay connected to the vine. The Apostle Paul echoes this in his letter to the Philippians:

“For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”
— Philippians 2:13 (KJV)

On our own, we won’t have the desire or ability to pursue God or live according to His ways. It is God who gives us both the willingness and the strength to please Him. Without Him, we can neither bear fruit nor live a life that honors Him. Truly, without Him, we can do nothing.

So how do we abide in Him? Jesus tells us:

“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.”
— John 15:7–8 (KJV)

To abide in Christ and bear lasting fruit, His word must abide in us. We must feed on His word and pray with it daily. The Apostle John also confirms this:

“Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.”
— 1 John 2:24 (KJV)

Let the word of Christ dwell richly in your heart. It is your connection to the vine and the secret to a fruitful life.

Prayer
Help me, Lord, to understand that without You, I cannot bear fruit. Help me to feed on Your word daily so that I may abide in You and bear lasting fruit.
