Don’t Serve and Starve

“But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.”
Luke 10:40 (KJV)

As believers, it’s important to be active and serve in our local churches. However, some are more devoted to activities than to God’s Word. They are constantly busy, yet spiritually empty. These are the ones who serve hard but listen little — and eventually, they become the very people who stir up strife in God’s house.

In Luke 10, Jesus visits the home of Martha and Mary. Martha is bustling with tasks, while Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, soaking in His words. Offended by Mary’s apparent inaction, Martha complains — and Jesus gently responds:

“Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:41–42 (KJV)

The lesson here is clear: Hearing God’s Word is the most essential part of any gathering. Service is good — but not at the cost of spiritual nourishment. No matter how legitimate your role in church may be — ushering, traffic control, media, logistics — it must never replace your time in the Word. Find a way to feed your spirit even while you serve. Otherwise, you’ll end up busy but barren.

Spiritual growth should never be sacrificed on the altar of service. You can serve for years and still remain a spiritual infant if you neglect the Word. Prioritize spiritual growth. Choose the better part.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help me not to engage in fruitless activities. Let my service be rooted in Your Word and have eternal value. Amen.
