Honoring the Price Paid

“Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.”
Isaiah 53:4–5 (NIV)

When we speak about the saving work of Christ, we are not recounting a myth or a poetic legend. We are speaking of the God of the universe stepping into His creation in humility, taking on human flesh, and bearing the punishment for our sins. The pain and suffering He endured were not ordinary—they were the weight of the sins of all humanity across all generations. Most agonizing of all, He bore the separation from the Father so that we never would.

Christ did this so we might be free—free from sin, free from the power of Satan, and free from the penalty of eternal death. This truth should awaken us to the seriousness of sin. If Jesus died to save us from it, then sin must be more terrible than we often imagine. The enemy’s deception is to make us think that forgiveness means freedom to live however we please. But the cross tells us the opposite: if He gave His life to deliver us from sin, then we cannot treat sin lightly.

When we truly grasp what happened at Calvary, it stirs in us a holy desire to live in a way that pleases Him. Paul reminds us that “He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and was raised again” (2 Corinthians 5:15). Many rejoice at the thought that Christ died for them, but fewer embrace the call to live for Him. Yet both are inseparable—His death is our salvation, and our life is meant to be His glory.

Let us, therefore, live each day in such a way that our choices, words, and actions testify that we honor the price He paid. This is the only fitting response to the cross.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for taking my place, bearing my sin, and paying the ultimate price for my freedom. Help me to live each day in a way that honors Your sacrifice, turning from sin and walking in obedience to You. Amen.
