Born of God, Empowered to Overcome

“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves His child as well. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out His commands. In fact, this is love for God: to keep His commands. And His commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.”
—1 John 5:1–5 (NIV)

When the Apostle John writes these words, he paints a complete picture of the Christian life: faith in Jesus as the Christ, love for God and His children, and obedience to God’s commands. Far from being a heavy weight, John tells us that God’s commandments are not burdensome. Why? Because everyone who is born of God has already been given victory over the world through faith in Christ. In other words, our obedience flows out of our new identity as children of God, and this identity equips us to overcome.

God’s commandments remain central to the believer’s walk with Him. John ties our love for God directly to keeping His commands. Love without obedience is incomplete. From Genesis to Revelation, God’s commands reveal His character and His will for humanity. They guide us away from destruction and into life. This is why Jesus Himself said in John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commands.” The commands of God are not outdated rules from a distant past—they are a living expression of His holy nature and a framework for walking in true fellowship with Him.

Yet, we must understand the change that Christ’s sacrifice has brought. What shifted was not the importance of God’s commands but their place in the plan of salvation. Scripture is clear: “Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law” (Romans 3:20). We are not justified by keeping the law, but by faith in Christ (Galatians 2:16). The law could never save us; only Christ could. Now, being justified by faith, we are made new creations in Him. This new life empowers us to walk by the Spirit and not gratify the desires of the flesh.

When we yield to the Spirit, we discover that God’s commands are no longer an impossible weight but a joyful expression of our love for Him. The struggle Paul describes in Romans 7 (desiring to do good but unable to do it) reflects the condition of someone still under the bondage of sin. In Christ, however, we have been given power to overcome. The key is to deliberately and continually walk in the Spirit. As Paul reminds us in Galatians 5:16: “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

The truth is, we cannot live for God in our own strength. Left to ourselves, obedience is impossible. But when we rely on the Spirit, God empowers us daily to live victoriously. Jesus Himself assures us of this in Matthew 11:28–30 (NIV):
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

This is the believer’s reality: in Christ, His yoke is easy, His burden is light, and His commands are not burdensome. Because we are born of God, we have already overcome the world—and this victory is secured through our faith.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the victory I have in Christ. Help me to see my daily need for You and to rely on Your Spirit in every area of my life. Teach me to walk in the Spirit continually, so that I may live in obedience, freedom, and victory. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
