“Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.”
– Romans 12:11 (NIV)
The Apostle Paul exhorts us to remain fervent in spirit, emphasizing that spiritual coldness undermines our ability to accomplish Godly tasks. As believers, we cannot achieve anything significant for God’s kingdom without the fire of the Spirit. Regardless of the spiritual aspirations we have, they will remain unfulfilled if we lose our fervor. Isaiah 9:7 reminds us of this truth: “The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this” (NIV).
The NLT translates this as, “The passionate commitment of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!” This shows us that God Himself works with passionate zeal, and as His followers, we are called to do the same.
One of the enemy’s primary tactics is to extinguish our spiritual fervency because he knows that a lukewarm believer cannot further God’s agenda. Satan is less concerned with your natural success if it does not align with God’s purposes. His primary opposition is against God’s plan for your life.
To stay effective in God’s work, we must fight to retain the fire of the Spirit. Paul urged the Thessalonian church:
“Do not quench the Spirit.”
– 1 Thessalonians 5:19 (NIV)
This instruction reminds us to keep the flame of the Spirit alive in our hearts. A lack of spiritual fervor makes us vulnerable to deception and satanic attacks. On the other hand, when we are spiritually fervent, we walk in discernment and pose a threat to the enemy.
The fire of the Spirit not only fuels our passion for God’s work but also protects us from the enemy’s schemes. This is why maintaining spiritual fervor is non-negotiable. A sinful lifestyle is one of Satan’s most potent tools for quenching this fire. Sin defiles us and weakens our consciousness of God, making us unpassionate for the things of God.
To sustain the fire of the Spirit, we must establish guardrails in our lives. These include consistent spiritual disciplines such as prayer, meditating on God’s Word, worship, and fellowship with other fervent believers. These practices ensure that we remain on fire for God and aligned with His purposes.
Prayer
Lord, help me to remain fervent in spirit, continually serving Your will, plan, and purpose. Amen!
