Living by Faith

Discipleship Devotional, January 8th, 2025

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV)

As believers, we are called to a life of faith, transcending reliance on just our natural senses. We no longer live as mere natural beings who make decisions solely based on what we see, feel, or hear. While these senses are important, they do not define the fullness of a believer’s life. We are given the gift of spiritual senses—most importantly, faith. God wants us to see with the eyes of faith and to walk by faith.

The life of faith involves trusting God’s Word above any circumstances we may face. Faith opens us up to a realm of possibilities that our natural senses alone cannot comprehend. What once seemed impossible becomes possible. Jesus Himself taught us that nothing is impossible when we have faith in God. Some today criticize faith teachers for encouraging believers to strive for the seemingly impossible. Yet, Jesus was the greatest faith teacher of all. He continually called His followers to trust God for the impossible.

For example, He said,
“Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.”
Matthew 17:20 (KJV)

So today, I encourage you—if you believe in God’s Word, you will witness His glory. When you choose to stop walking solely by your natural sight and begin to walk by faith, you will experience the impossible in your life. The Psalmist reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not lean on our own understanding, but to acknowledge Him in all our ways.

However, remember that faith does not replace the use of our natural senses. If that were the case, God would have removed our brains at salvation! Instead, faith adds a “super” to our “natural.” This means that after doing all we can with the wisdom and understanding God has given us, we still pray, trust, and put our hope in Him to work in ways beyond our abilities.

Prayer:
Help me, Lord, to walk by faith and not by sight alone. May I trust You fully in every area of my life. Thank You, Heavenly Father. Amen.
