And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
-1 Corinthians 10:4 (NIV)
We live in a world where many things pose as firm foundations, trying to draw our faith and trust toward them. Riches and fame attempt to present themselves as reliable foundations. Power and connections also seek to take the place of our trust. Many people trust in chariots and horses. But as believers, we are called to place our trust solely in the name of the LORD.
Christ is the only firm foundation upon which we can stand. All other grounds, no matter how solid they may appear, are sinking sand. You must resolve to put your trust in God and not in any man. Yes, God may use people as channels of help for you, but never take your eyes off God to fix them on man. This doesn’t mean we dishonor the means through which God helps us, but we must never trust the means over God.
The undoing of many people in Africa is their reliance on an uncle, aunt, or relative to do something for them. Instead, make up your mind to “look up to the hills from whence cometh our help.” Our help comes from the Lord Most High, and in Him alone should we place our trust.
I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
-Psalm 121:1-3 (NIV)
Decide early that you will not look to any man for your promotion or advancement in life. The Bible says promotion does not come from the east or the west (Psalm 75:6). It comes from the Lord. Why then should you make any man your god? Why turn to another source as your god? Only God deserves all the praise and credit in your life.
Prayer
Help me, Father, to continually put my trust in You, knowing that You are my firm foundation.
