Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
– Revelation 3:17 (KJV)
There’s a profound statement I heard from a minister years ago:
“Some people are so poor that all they have is money.”
This statement carries a deep truth about what truly holds value in God’s sight. Our anchor text shows us that it is possible to be materially wealthy yet spiritually poor, blind, and naked. While material wealth is not inherently bad, God’s desire is for us to be rich in faith.
What does it mean to be rich in faith? The Bible describes varying levels of faith—great faith, little faith, and no faith—showing us that faith is measurable. God’s intention is for us to cultivate great faith, growing spiritually deeper and becoming rich in faith.
Building great faith is like building a strong relationship. The more you truly know someone, the more you are able to trust them. Similarly, the depth of our relationship with God directly correlates to the richness of our faith.
The parable of the rich fool (Luke 12:20-21) illustrates this truth. Jesus recounts the story of a man who stored up material wealth but neglected his relationship with God:
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
This parable reminds us that material riches alone cannot satisfy or prepare us for eternity. True riches are found in a thriving relationship with God.
As you invest in your financial growth, I urge you to also invest in your spiritual growth. Seek to grow your faith and deepen your relationship with God. Being rich toward God is what matters most.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, help me to prioritize my spiritual well-being and not focus solely on my material needs. Teach me to be rich in faith and to grow deeper in my relationship with You. Amen.
