The Hot Temper of Fools

Discipleship Devotional, January 23rd, 2025

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
– Ecclesiastes 7:9 (KJV)

A lot of people think a hot temper is something to be happy about. You hear them bragging about how, when they get angry, no one can talk to them or calm them. This is a sign of foolishness, and there simply is no kinder way to put it. The Bible is a source of wisdom for us, and our anchor text tells us not to be quickly angry. It tells us not to be hot-tempered because that is the behavior of fools.

Some people, out of a hot temper, have destroyed valuable resources, friendships, relationships, etc. Some have even committed murder because of a hot temper. One emotion that must be put under serious control at all times is anger. Acting in human wrath, more often than not, produces regrettable actions. This is what we see in Scripture.

In the epistle of James, we are told that human anger does not produce the righteousness of God. This is why we must never allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by anger. If you are the kind of person who is always swift to anger, let this devotional be a caution to you.

He who is slow to anger has great understanding [and profits from his self-control], but he who is quick-tempered exposes and exalts his foolishness [for all to see].
– Proverbs 14:29 (AMP)

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
– James 1:19-20 (NIV)

If you are a person who has always bragged about having a hot temper, I want you to change your confession. Start saying what the Word says. Say from today: ā€œI’m slow to become angry.ā€

Prayer:
Thank You, Father, for the wisdom that Your Word provides. I refuse to be a fool by allowing myself to be controlled by anger.
