“And besides they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not.”
– 1st Timothy 5:13 (NKJV)
A lot of people struggling with sins and addictions would avoid such struggles by staying occupied. Idleness is one of the easiest ways to allow sinful thoughts and habits to dominate your mind. It does not matter how prayerful you are; if you are idle, you are more susceptible to falling into temptation.
The man of God, Billy Graham, once said: “Some temptations come to all men, but all temptations come to the idle.” This is such a profound and true statement. The idle mind is truly the devil’s workshop. Therefore, we must make sure we are not living idle lives.
No matter the situation of the country you reside in, even if there are no jobs, make sure you are busy with something each day. This drastically reduces the chances of your mind encountering temptations. Also, the Word of God frowns upon idleness and uses many strong words to warn about it.
From the Old Testament to the New Testament, God’s people are warned about idleness. And it is not only because laziness and idleness lead to lack, but because they lead to sin. Hence, even if you are rich and wealthy, or your parents left you an inheritance of billions such that you don’t need to work for money, it is still dangerous to be idle. With such money and access, the devil will plant all manner of ideas in your mind. This is the reason some rich and wealthy people do despicable things with their money. It is not the will of God for any of us to be idle, and this is independent of your financial situation.
In the context of our anchor text, it is worth noting that the apostle Paul discussed church welfare with Timothy. He advised that older widows should be provided with support, resembling a stipend, whereas he cautioned against extending the same assistance to younger widows. Paul expressed concerns that such support might lead to idleness, potentially resulting in gossip and a tendency to meddle in the affairs of others due to their idleness.
Prayer:
Thank you, Lord, for this word of admonition today. From today, I choose never to live in idleness.
