“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:”
– Ephesians 6:17 (KJV)
Amongst the several pieces of armor of God spoken of by the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 6, one crucial one is what he called “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” While the word of God is called our light, lamp, life, etc., we must also be aware that the word of God is an offensive weapon. It is the only offensive weapon mentioned amongst all the weapons in Ephesians 6.
The writer of Hebrews says the same thing in describing the word of God, testifying that it is sharper than every sword. So we cannot afford to be ignorant of the powerful weapon that is the word of God. We must not treat it with levity. If a person doesn’t know how endowed his weapon is, he wouldn’t know how much he can do with it.
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
– Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)
There is no doubt that God’s word is powerful; however, many don’t know how to put it to work. The question becomes, “How can God’s word be powerful in my use?” A lot of people erroneously think it’s by sleeping with a Bible on their chest. This is futile. Some others even think it’s by cramming Bible passages in their brains. This is also not going to amount to much. God’s word becomes powerful in our mouths after internalizing it through meditation and prayer. When we meditate on God’s word and pray it into our souls, it will be ready for use on the day of trouble. It’s not just about putting it in your brain—it must resound in your spirit.
“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”
– Joshua 1:8 (KJV)
PRAYER
I choose to meditate on God’s word and put it to use by speaking it in the day of trouble. I choose to speak God’s word before the negative circumstances of life.
