Established on Better Promises

Discipleship Devotional, March 4th, 2025

“But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which He is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.”
Hebrews 8:6 (NIV)

The New Covenant, which we now enjoy through the grace of Christ, stands far above the Old Covenant. The Old Covenant was based on the people’s ability to keep the laws, which they continually failed to uphold. In contrast, the New Covenant is not dependent on human effort but on the perfect and unblemished sacrifice of Jesus Christ—the Lamb of God. No longer is the blood of bulls and goats required for atonement, for our High Priest, Jesus, offered His blood once and for all.

There is a significant difference between the Old and New Covenants, and this difference extends to the promises each provides. The Old Covenant relied on imperfect priests who had to offer yearly sacrifices for both their sins and the sins of the people. But Jesus, our perfect High Priest, has ushered in a better covenant—a covenant built upon better promises.

The writer of Hebrews explains further:
“For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. But God found fault with the people and said: ‘The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord. This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, “Know the Lord,” because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.’ By calling this covenant “new,” He has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.”
Hebrews 8:7-13 (NIV)

The better promises of the New Covenant are not based on our works but on God’s grace. In this covenant, God says repeatedly, “I will…” because it rests on His perfect ability, not ours. He has promised to forgive our sins, to write His laws on our hearts, and to be our God. These promises are eternal, established through Christ’s sacrifice, and they give us hope beyond measure.

Prayer:
Thank You, Lord, for the New Covenant established on better promises. We are grateful that our salvation does not depend on our works but on Your grace. Amen.
