Jesus: The Express Image of God

Discipleship Devotional, March 7th, 2025

“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the express image of his person, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”
– Hebrews 1:3 (NIV)

A lot of people have opinions about who Jesus is; some call Him a ‘messenger of God,’ some call Him a prophet, others call Him a great teacher. In fact, when Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do men say that I the Son of Man am?” (Matthew 16:13–14), we are told that some said He was Elijah, Jeremiah, and even John the Baptist.

So, it is not new for people to have all manner of opinions about Jesus, but the position of God’s word is our final authority. The Bible teaches in several passages of Scripture that Jesus Christ is the visible and ‘seeable’ representation of God the Father. God is said to dwell in unapproachable light, and Scripture records that no one has seen Him nor can see Him. Hence, Jesus is the one who reveals the Father to us.

“No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.”
– John 1:18 (NIV)

Knowing this, the Father knew that no man could know Him in all His almightiness. Like He told Moses, no one can see Him and remain alive. The glory of His presence would obliterate the person from existence. This was why He decided to make Himself known in Christ. In the text above (John 1:18), the Scriptures say that no one has seen the Father at any time, but He has been revealed through the Son.

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;”
– Colossians 1:14-15, 19 (NIV)

The Apostle Paul calls Him the image of the invisible God. He says God is pleased for all His fullness to dwell in Christ. In fact, he went on to say all the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Christ in bodily form (Colossians 2:9). This is who Jesus is. Therefore, when we understand this, it strengthens our faith because we know our hope is not in a mere man to take us to God—our hope is in God who came in human form.

PRAYER

Dear Lord Jesus, help me to see You as God. Help me to honour You as God, and help me daily to grasp better the truth of Your deity.
