“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”
— 1 John 3:2 (KJV)
John writes to the churches, affirming that we are God’s children right now, not just when we get to heaven. He said it doesn’t appear what we shall be at Christ’s coming, but as of now, we are sure that we are already His children. This is powerful. In the preceding verse, he said, “Behold, what manner of love the Father has lavished upon us that we should be called the sons of God.”
The privilege of having God as our Father is not one that is tasted by every human. Every human is a creature of God and can be generically called “children of God” in that sense. But it’s the ones who believe in Christ that truly carry God’s DNA. This person is a child of God because he is born of the Word and of the Spirit of God. That’s the DNA of God.
“Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.”
— 1 John 5:1 (KJV)
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
— John 1:12-13 (KJV)
The above scripture is clear that as many as believed in Him were given the power to become sons of God. And it went on to say this sonship is not just generic but literally being born of God. This is what it means to be born again. The life and nature of God (His DNA) is now in you as a believer. Therefore, you have an advantage. Glory to God.
We are called heirs of God who have the privilege to be called God’s Abba—which literally means Daddy (Romans 8:15–17, Galatians 4:6–7). So as an heir of God, choose to bask in your understanding and privileges of sonship today. You are a carrier of His seed and His Spirit. Truly, what manner of love He has lavished on us, for us to be called His children!

Heavenly Father, help me to deny myself for the sake of the brethren.
