How can a young person stay on the path of purity?
By living according to your word.
Psalm 119:9 (NIV)
The Word of God is the infallible compass for navigating life. We live in a time of profound moral darkness—perhaps unlike any the world has ever known—where good is called evil and evil is celebrated as good. Even more subtle is the challenge of distinguishing truth from almost-truth. It’s no longer just about discerning white from black, but also white from grey.
This is the complex spiritual battle believers face today. And yet, the answer remains the same as it has always been: walk the old, narrow way. Our anchor scripture provides a timeless solution—“By living according to your word.” This has been God’s prescription for generations.
To stay on the narrow path, we must first devote ourselves to the study of God’s Word—to know it deeply and accurately. Then, we must engage in meditation—turning the Word over in our hearts and minds until it becomes part of us.
The psalmist urges us to meditate on the Word day and night, echoing God’s instruction to Joshua:
“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.”
(Joshua 1:8)
The truth is, whenever we find ourselves straying from the path of light, it’s often preceded by a season of neglect—neglecting to study, meditate, or pray with the Word. And where the Word is absent, Satan is quick to fill the void with his deceptive ideas.
Today, I urge you to take the Word of God more seriously. Look at how seriously God instructed the Israelites to treat it:
“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”
—Deuteronomy 6:6–9
May we embrace the Word of God with the same intensity. Amen.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, help me to treasure, study, and meditate on God’s Word more and more each day. Let it be my guide, my strength, and my delight. Amen.
