Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence…
– Philippians 2:12 (KJV)
As believers, we have been called to walk in the light and in godly integrity, not only when people are there but also when we think no one can see us. Integrity is different from reputation or public image. Integrity is about who we are and what we do when no one can see us. The test of true integrity is about what you would do if you knew that no one would ever find out and hold you accountable.
One of the reasons people struggle with integrity, even in private, is that they somehow think that God does not see them. If we knew that even if no one can see us, God can see us, I believe it will drive us more towards doing the right thing. Let’s assume you have the opportunity to cheat people without them finding out. Would you do that? These are the crucial questions we must ask ourselves to keep ourselves in check.
We are not only to obey when people are there. Paul says in our anchor text that we should even do much more when people are not there.
So as we speak about personal integrity today, the Holy Spirit is admonishing us to walk in the light at all times. He is reminding us that He dwells in us and is with us always. In other words, we are never alone. So even if no one is there, the Holy Spirit is there. So therefore, it is important that we don’t conduct ourselves in a way that grieves and brings sorrow to Him.
Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;
– Ephesians 6:5–7 (KJV)
Prayer
Holy Spirit, empower me to embody godly integrity, not just for men to see, but as an integral part of my being.
