We Have Overcome the World

Discipleship Devotional, April 26th, 2025

“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”
1 John 5:4–5 (KJV)

The believer in Christ has already overcome the world and its forces. In our anchor text, we see that faith in Christ Jesus is the victory that overcomes the world. The moment someone receives Christ and makes Him their Lord, they partake in His victory over the world. Amazing! This victory is not by any merit or effort of the individual—it is entirely because Christ has overcome the world and its powers. He told us to take heart, because He has already overcome the world.

“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33 (KJV)

These words of Jesus remind us that being an overcomer doesn’t mean we will not face battles or challenges in life. In fact, Jesus clearly states that tribulations are inevitable. However, our victory is already secured because Christ has triumphed over the world on our behalf.

Just like every other promise in Scripture, we are called to prayerfully enforce this truth in our lives. The Bible says that sin shall not have dominion over us. But if you notice anything contrary, you must boldly enforce God’s Word in prayer—and you will experience the same victory Christ won.

So, while we are reminded today that we are more than conquerors through Christ, we must also acknowledge that the Christian journey involves battles. Jesus fought, conquered, and overcame all the powers of darkness through His victory over death and Satan. Therefore, when we identify with Christ, we too are overcomers. We must stand firm in that victory and actively enforce it in our daily lives. As we do, we will walk in triumph over Satan, sin, and the forces of this world.

You must first embrace the mindset that you have already overcome—so that Satan cannot fill your heart with fear. When you know your position in Christ, you are assured of the outcome, regardless of the storms you face. You are assured of victory.

“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
Romans 8:37 (KJV)

As we journey through life, God has already assured us that no matter the trials or tribulations we encounter, we have the victory through Christ. We are overcomers. We have overcome sin and Satan; we have overcome death and hell; we have overcome the systems of this world—because we are united with Christ, the Victorious One.

“Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.”
2 Corinthians 2:14 (KJV)

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for giving us victory over all the forces of darkness. Thank You, Heavenly Father, for seating us with Christ in His triumph. Holy Spirit, help me walk daily in the reality of this victory. Amen.
