Great is His Love

Discipleship Devotional, May 21st, 2025

“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.”
— Ephesians 2:4-5 (NIV)

The love of God towards us is one subject that we can never exhaust. We could write a million books about it, and we will never be able to fully tell the length, breadth, depth, and height of His love. His love for us is overwhelming, and we can only be grateful for it. Our anchor text tells us that it was because of His love for us that He made us alive in Christ. We were dead in our trespasses, and we did not even know. We did not even ask to be saved because we did not know we needed any saving.

The greatest demonstration of this great love is in the sacrificial work of Christ on the cross for us. John the Apostle said:

“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”
— 1 John 4:9-10 (NIV)

A lot of times, people take the love of God for granted because they don’t know the alternative to this love. If we were not the objects of His love and mercy, the alternative is eternal damnation. But He did not just save us from eternal damnation, He went on to give us a place of honour in His royal family. This is love so inexplicable. The Psalmist said:

“But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.”
— Psalm 86:15 (NIV)

Just as His mercies are new every morning, His love is ever abounding. It is limitless. What a privilege to be loved by Him.

Thank You, Heavenly Father, for showering us with Your great love
