The Surrendered Life

Discipleship Devotional, May 24th, 2025

“Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.”
Romans 6:13 (KJV)

To surrender or yield means to give something up or to give way to a demand of another. When a person is said to have surrendered to something, it means they have submitted their own will to the authority of another. As believers in Christ, we are instructed to yield ourselves unto God as those who have been raised to life from spiritual death. In the anchor text above, the Apostle Paul spoke about us believers yielding our lives to becoming instruments of righteousness rather than instruments of sin.

Though this is a very important topic, this is not exactly the context our devotional will deal with today. This is because living a yielded life goes further than walking in righteousness or not walking in righteousness. Living a yielded life also involves being willing and obedient to follow God’s leading on issues that are not clearly black (sin) or white (not sin). A truly surrendered life is one that has died to self and now fully lives only for the glory of God. This is the point that God wants all believers to get to.

This is what Paul described in the second chapter of his epistle to the church in Galatia:

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
Galatians 2:20 (KJV)

When we are completely surrendered to Christ and His Spirit, we submit all our plans and ambitions to His auditing. At this point, we are walking in the Spirit, following His lead and living in cooperation with Him. This life is one that is beautifully described in the old phrase for consecration that says “others may, but I can’t.”

The truth is that sometimes the instructions given to us when we are fully yielded to God may not be what is popularly desirable; other times, such instructions may put us in the spotlight and in the paparazzi. Whichever way, we are called to surrender to God’s leadings at all times. This is why we don’t judge success before God with the parameters that men use.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me to yield my will to Yours all the days of my life. By the power of Your Spirit in me, I will follow Your lead.
