“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”
— Galatians 1:8 (KJV)
While visions and revelations are powerful, we must know that the Word of God has a more superior authority than any dream, vision, or revelation. This is because the realm of the supernatural is an open world of its own, which hosts not just the Holy Spirit and heavenly forces, but also evil and demonic personalities.
Hence, we judge whatever we see in a vision by God’s Word. If it does not line up with the Word, we are to discard it. Paul expressed this when he wrote to the Galatian church, saying that even if they see an angel from heaven who contradicts the gospel, they are not to take it.
Our anchor text tells us that even if we see an angel who contradicts the truth of the gospel, we are not to accept that angel. Many have been deceived by so-called angels who they saw. Others have thought they saw Jesus when actually it was a disguise by the devil (2 Corinthians 11:14). Hence, we don’t judge what we see in a vision by how the personality looks; rather, we judge it by how much it conforms to the truth of the Word. This is why we cannot afford to be ignorant of the Word of God.
The Apostle Peter said the same thing after he described what happened at the mount of transfiguration when the heavens opened and the voice of God validated Jesus as His beloved Son in whom God is well pleased. After using that experience to prove that Christ was the Messiah, Peter further went on to say that there’s a “more sure word” of prophecy, which is the Holy Scriptures. In other words, the prophecies about Christ in the Scriptures have more weight to prove that Jesus is the Messiah than even the spiritual experience he had (2 Peter 1:16–21).
Prayer
Help me, Lord, to honour Your Word above all else so that I will dwell safely in Your truth. Help me not to be misled.
