“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”
— Psalm 1:1 (KJV)
One of the most important decisions you can make for your spiritual growth is choosing the right company. The Bible is clear that walking in the counsel of the ungodly leads to spiritual decline, but surrounding yourself with godly influences leads to blessing and growth.
In the parable of the sower, Jesus spoke about four categories of people and their response to the gospel. One group He highlighted was the seed that fell among thorns. He explained that the thorns represent the cares of this life, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things—all of which choke the word and make it unfruitful (Mark 4:18–19).
A major contributor to these “thorns” is wrong company. Trying to grow spiritually while staying in ungodly environments is like planting a tree among thorns—it struggles and may eventually wither. Receiving Christ without changing your influences often leads to being dragged back into worldly habits.
“Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’”
— 1 Corinthians 15:33 (NIV)
God’s will is for you to be planted among those who build your faith. The Bible calls us “trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified” (Isaiah 61:3). Like any healthy tree, you thrive when you’re rooted in the right environment.
The early church understood this principle. In Acts 2, the believers were intentional about fellowship. They worshiped, prayed, ate, and grew together. Their strength was in their unity and godly community.
“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”
— Proverbs 27:17 (KJV)
The people you listen to, spend time with, and seek counsel from will shape the direction of your life. Surround yourself with those who strengthen your walk with God, not those who pull you away from it.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me to value and pursue godly friendships. Give me the wisdom to choose the right company and the courage to let go of any relationships that hinder my spiritual growth. Plant me among those who sharpen my faith and draw me closer to You. Amen.
