“Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.”
— 2 Timothy 2:16 (NIV)
One of the simplest yet most powerful ways to either preserve or defile your heart is through the kind of conversations you entertain. As a believer, you must guard your ears, your words, and the company you keep.
Our anchor text warns that “godless chatter” leads to increasing ungodliness. Profanity, gossip, negativity, and unwholesome talk all plant seeds that can corrupt your spirit. That is why it’s so important to avoid conversations that promote sin or diminish faith.
The people you surround yourself with matter. If your friends constantly gossip, speak doubt, or make light of holy things, their words will influence your heart. Likewise, you should also take care not to become that kind of influence in someone else’s life.
Paul writes:
“Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.”
— Ephesians 5:4 (KJV)
As believers, we are called to engage in godly, edifying conversations. Even in casual settings, we should strive for words that are clean, gracious, and uplifting—not words that tear down or defile. When believers gather, their fellowship should strengthen each other, not drag each other further from God.
Paul further instructs:
“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”
— Colossians 4:6 (KJV)
“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”
— Ephesians 4:29 (KJV)
Your words have power. Use them wisely. Choose conversations that build your faith and inspire others toward godliness. Guard your heart and your tongue, and you will honor God even in the smallest exchanges.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to guard my heart and my tongue. Teach me to avoid godless chatter and instead speak words that edify and glorify You. May my conversations reflect Your grace and minister life to those who hear me. Amen.
