“Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.”
— Hebrews 10:24–25 (NLT)
Many believers are familiar with the truth that we, as individuals, are temples of the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul declared that our bodies are God’s dwelling place. And this is absolutely correct.
However, many are less aware of an equally profound truth: the entire church collectively is also the temple of God. Beyond just being individual temples, God’s plan has always been for His people to exist in unity and interconnectedness—as one holy temple, built together for His glory.
God never intended for us to live in isolation or spiritual independence. Throughout Scripture, His design for us is described as a body, a house, a family—each member intricately connected, relying on one another to grow and flourish.
“Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. Through him you Gentiles are also being made part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit.”
— Ephesians 2:20–22 (NLT)
Sadly, the focus in modern Christianity often leans heavily toward individual identity while neglecting God’s greater vision of a united body. Yet Scripture repeatedly uses metaphors from human anatomy and architecture to illustrate how we are connected and interdependent.
Today’s text urges us not to forsake the fellowship of believers. We need each other—not only for encouragement and accountability but also because God dwells in the collective gathering of His people in a unique way.
Take full advantage of the church. Don’t neglect meeting with fellow saints. God’s presence, strength, and wisdom flow powerfully in the context of unity. Together, we are His temple.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for making me part of Your body, the church. Help me to value the fellowship of believers, to play my part in building up Your house, and to encourage others in love and good works. Amen.
