“I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.”
— John 9:4 (KJV)
Our youthful years are the daytime of our lives, and our older years draw closer to the nighttime, when we will sleep in the Lord. Even the Lord Jesus, during His earthly ministry, was conscious of this truth. He said He must work the Father’s works while it is day, because the night would come when no one can work.
What this means is that now is our opportunity to live for Christ. Now is our chance to spend our strength, time, and energy in service to Him. Sadly, many people choose to spend their youth in pursuit of earthly pleasures and distractions, telling themselves they will serve God later, when they are older.
But what they fail to realize is that it becomes much harder to start serving God later in life—and many miss the chance altogether.
“It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.”
— Lamentations 3:27 (KJV)
Scripture tells us it is good to bear the Lord’s yoke while we are young. This is because now is when we have the strength and capacity to carry His cross. When we grow older, we may not have the same vigor to serve Him as we could have in our youth.
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
— Matthew 11:28–30 (KJV)
If you postpone serving God until later, you risk filling your life with regret. Many elderly people desire to serve God but no longer have the strength to do what they could have done in their youth. Therefore, work the works of Him who has called you while it is day. Don’t grow weary in your service to Christ—He is the great Rewarder, and He will not forget your labor of love.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, help me to live for Jesus today. Strengthen me to take up my cross and follow Him. Help me to spend my youth and my strength in service to the Lord. Amen.
