Love: The More Excellent Way

“Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way.”
1 Corinthians 12:31 (NIV)

The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, spoke extensively about the gifts of the Spirit: words of wisdom and knowledge, gifts of healing, working of miracles, discerning of spirits, tongues, and interpretation. These are all powerful manifestations of God’s Spirit, and Paul encouraged believers to earnestly desire them. Yet, after listing all these gifts, he made a striking statement: “And yet I will show you the most excellent way.”

What could possibly be greater than miracles, prophecy, or extraordinary faith? Paul’s answer is simple: love. He explained that without love, even the most dramatic spiritual expressions amount to nothing. One may speak with the tongues of angels, prophesy with precision, or even give away all possessions to the poor, but without love, it profits nothing. Without love, Paul says, we are no more than noise, like clanging cymbals.

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
1 Corinthians 13:1–3 (NIV)

This is why love is called the more excellent way. Spiritual gifts are vital, and we should desire them, but they must operate from the foundation of love. Gifts may fail, knowledge may pass away, and prophecies may cease, but love never fails. It is eternal because it reflects the very nature of God, who is love.

The call, therefore, is not to neglect spiritual gifts but to pursue them with the right heart. The gifts of the Spirit without love can wound rather than build up, but when exercised through love, they edify, heal, and reveal Christ to the world. Love is the guiding principle that ensures we use God’s gifts rightly and effectively.

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, teach me to live by this more excellent way. Let love be the foundation of my life and the motive behind every gift, action, and word. Help me to walk in love at all times, just as Christ loved me and gave Himself for me. Amen.
