The Greatness of Servanthood

“Jesus called them together and said, ‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’”
Matthew 20:25–28 (NIV)

In our anchor text, Jesus draws a sharp distinction between leadership in the world and leadership in His kingdom. In the world, authority is often expressed through domination, pride, and self-serving ambition. Leaders expect to be served and exalted. But in the kingdom of God, greatness is defined by service. True leadership is not about status but about humility and sacrifice.

Jesus Himself modeled this perfectly. Though He is Lord of all, He came not to be served but to serve, ultimately giving His life as a ransom for many. This redefines greatness entirely. In God’s eyes, the pathway to honor is through humility, and the measure of a leader is not how many people serve him, but how many he serves.

This principle also points us toward our eternal hope. In this world, the lust for power and domination makes true equity impossible. But in the new heaven and the new earth, there will be no sin, pride, or selfish ambition. Every heart will be perfected in Christ, desiring only to please God. In that eternal kingdom, peace, love, and humility will reign.

Jesus emphasized this again when He said, “The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted” (Matthew 23:11–12, NIV). God’s kingdom flips the world’s values upside down: humility leads to exaltation, and servanthood leads to greatness.

Prayer:
Thank You, Lord Jesus, for showing us the true meaning of greatness. Teach me to walk in humility and to serve others as You did. May my life reflect the values of Your kingdom and bring glory to Your name. Amen.
