“So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?’”
— Hebrews 13:6 (NIV)
One of the greatest blessings anyone can enjoy is living under the continual help of God. The more we live with a posture of dependence, fully aware that we need Him, the more we see His marvelous hand at work in our lives. On the other hand, the more we think we have life all figured out, the less we experience His divine help.
King David’s life illustrates this principle well. As you read through the Psalms, you see how often he cried out to God for help and deliverance. Someone unfamiliar with David’s status might think he was a helpless man, yet he was a powerful king! His secret was that he was constantly aware of how weak he was without God’s help.
This is why God was displeased when David chose to count the number of soldiers in his army (2 Samuel 24:1–17; 1 Chronicles 21:1–17). At first glance, it may seem like a harmless census, but God saw David’s heart. He was beginning to shift his confidence from God to the strength of his military.
In our lives today, it doesn’t matter how strong, skilled, or privileged we think we are; we must never let anything distract us from total trust in God. Every talent we have, every achievement we celebrate, and every resource we possess ultimately comes from Him.
Like David, we must make it our habit to cry out to God for help in every situation. Dependence on God is not a sign of weakness; it is the highest expression of wisdom and humility.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that I am nothing without You. Help me to trust You daily and never rely on my own strength. Thank You for being my ever-present Helper. Amen.
