“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
– 1 Corinthians 13:13
When we read this familiar verse, our attention is usually drawn to love, and rightly so, for love is the greatest. But notice that Paul does not only mention love; he mentions faith and hope too. These three are not random virtues but the very pillars of a victorious Christian life.
Throughout the New Testament, we see the apostles consistently emphasizing faith, hope, and love. In fact, these three capture the entire Christian journey. If a believer learns nothing else but these three, they will still live a rich, meaningful Christian life. That is how essential they are.
Paul highlights them again in 1 Thessalonians 1:3, saying:
“Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father.”
Here’s why they matter so much:
- Faith – This is where it all begins. Faith is how we are saved (Ephesians 2:8). It is our confidence in Jesus and His finished work on the cross. Faith connects us to the life of God. Without faith, it is impossible to please Him (Hebrews 11:6).
- Love – Once we are saved, love becomes the evidence of our new life. Love is how we relate to others: showing kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and generosity. Jesus said that by this love, the world will know we are His disciples (John 13:35).
- Hope – Hope keeps us looking forward. It is the anchor of our soul (Hebrews 6:19), giving us strength to endure challenges while eagerly anticipating the return of Christ. Hope keeps us spiritually awake and expectant.
Paul’s statement in 1 Corinthians 13:13 reminds us that while spiritual gifts like prophecy, tongues, and knowledge are valuable, they will eventually cease. But faith, hope, and love will never lose their relevance, not now, not ever.
This is not to downplay spiritual gifts; in fact, Paul goes on to encourage their use in 1 Corinthians 14. But he first reminds us that gifts are temporary tools, while faith, hope, and love are eternal essentials.
If these three are alive in you, you have what it takes to walk in victory.
PRAYER:
Holy Spirit, help me to hold fast to faith, hope, and love. Strengthen my faith in Jesus, fill my heart with love for others, and keep my hope alive as I await Christ’s return. Amen.
