The Perfect Mediator

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
— 1 Timothy 2:5 (KJV)

Since the fall of Adam, sin created a great divide between God and humanity. Because of God’s holiness and justice, man could no longer approach Him directly. Throughout the Old Testament, God related with His people through mediators—men who stood between Him and the people. The most prominent of these was Moses, who served as an intermediary, delivering God’s laws to Israel and interceding on their behalf.

However, even the best human mediators were imperfect. They could not fully bridge the gap between a holy God and sinful man. They, too, were flawed and needed forgiveness. The sacrifices they offered could only cover sin temporarily, not remove it completely.

This is why God sent Jesus Christ—our perfect and eternal Mediator. Unlike Moses or the prophets, Jesus did not merely represent man before God; He perfectly represented both God and man. He was fully divine and fully human, making Him the only one qualified to reconcile both parties. Through His death and resurrection, He tore down the wall of separation and opened the way for all humanity to come boldly before the throne of grace.

“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.” Hebrews 4:14–15 (NIV)

Jesus’ mediation is not temporary or limited. It is a once and for all mediation, ensuring that we stand justified before God, not on the basis of our works but through His finished work on the cross.

Long before Christ came, Job sensed this need deeply. In his pain, he cried out for someone to stand between him and God—a mediator who could reconcile them:

“God is not a mortal like me, so I cannot argue with him or take him to trial. If only there were a mediator between us, someone who could bring us together. The mediator could make God stop beating me, and I would no longer live in terror of his punishment. Then I could speak to him without fear, but I cannot do that in my own strength.”
— Job 9:32–35 (NLT)

What Job longed for, God fulfilled in Christ. Jesus is the answer to the cry of every human heart—the bridge between heaven and earth, our perfect Mediator forever.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending me a perfect mediator. Amen.
