Oppression of Sickness

Discipleship Devotional, February 5th, 2025

“And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?”
– Luke 13:16 (KJV)

In the above text, we find a woman who was in a terrible state for eighteen long years. The Bible tells us that she was bent over and could not straighten up at all. The interesting thing about this text is that Jesus tells us what was responsible. He said that she had been bound by Satan. What this tells us is that not all sicknesses are normal. In fact, sickness can be—and is oftentimes—a bondage of Satan. It is very important for believers to recognize this fact so that we can know how to discern and approach certain situations.

From the preaching of Peter at Cornelius’ house in Acts 10, we also find sickness associated with oppression from Satan:

“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.”
– Acts 10:38 (KJV)

If we don’t acknowledge the fact that sickness can be an oppression of Satan, we will not know how to deal with such sicknesses. Unless we discern it for what it is, we won’t break the hold of Satan. In fact, we won’t even think to break it. Don’t get me wrong, there are also sicknesses that are based on natural health causes. So we must also be able to use the natural medications that God has made available. However, for both natural sicknesses and those that are arrows of Satan, the name of Jesus is above every such sickness.

The power and authority in the name of Jesus must be wielded by the believer against every such oppression of Satan. We must not get comfortable with seeing satanic oppression around us, much less with us being oppressed by him. Today, I admonish you not to be ignorant of the devices of Satan and also not to be ignorant of the authority that Christ has given you. Use it to prayerfully put the devil on the run.

Prayer:

Every manifestation of satanic oppression around me, whether it’s sickness or otherwise, today I break it in the Name of Jesus.
