“Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.”
– 2nd Timothy 1:13 (KJV)
The Apostles of Christ were not indifferent to the kind of teachings that God’s people were being fed in the local churches. We ought not to be indifferent about sound doctrine. Jesus is very concerned about the teachings in the churches, as is evident in the letters He sent to the seven churches in the book of Revelation. Jesus called Peter three times and asked him to feed His sheep. This tells us that He takes the word that is taught very seriously.
Unfortunately, there are those who think we are doing too much when we insist on sound teaching and accurate biblical exposition. Many don’t see any problem with everyone having different explanations of different texts or different personal “revelations” on the meaning of certain texts. They think it’s unnecessary to insist on correct Bible interpretation. This is a wrong position. This ought not to be so. When we throw all caution to the wind on doctrine, we eventually allow all manner of falsehoods and false teachers to destroy the flock.
For example, one clear fact is that a verse of Scripture can never mean today what it never meant to the first readers. It can never be different from what the writer intended to communicate. We must insist on accurate biblical teaching, which only comes through diligent Bible study.
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
– 2nd Timothy 4:3-4 (KJV)
Prayer:
Help us, Heavenly Father, to discard whatever wrong doctrines we believe and to hold fast to that which is sound. Expose our hearts to Your truth much more.
