Every Good Gift

Discipleship Devotional, February 12th, 2025

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
– James 1:17 (KJV)

As believers, we are faced daily with the choice of patiently waiting to receive the gift that God has promised us or simply opting for the shortcut ‘gifts’ offered by Satan. A lot of times, the offers of the devil look pleasing to the eye, just like they did for Eve. But make no mistake, “the end thereof is destruction.” Like our anchor text says, every good gift comes from God. Satan does not give good gifts. This does not mean that he does not disguise his offers to look like good gifts. The scriptures tell us that he delights in deceiving and tricking people; after all, he is the father of lies.

Therefore, we must always be aware and never be deceived by his antics. It is only God who offers good and perfect gifts. “The blessing of the Lord makes rich and adds no sorrow with it.” (Proverbs 10:22) If you are reading this and you are at a crossroads in decision-making, I can assure you that whatever the devil is offering you is not good. It will wreck your life. You will be glad and fulfilled when you finally see what God had planned for you all along.

“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”
– Matthew 7:11 (KJV)

Whatever valley of decision you are in—whether it’s in picking a spouse, for example—don’t settle for just anyone simply because you think you are running out of time. No! God has His good and perfect gift waiting for you. If it is in the area of finances, don’t be pressured to do things that are against your faith. Wait on the Lord while working honestly; the Lord has a good gift waiting for you.

If we, who are earthly parents, know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more the Father of lights, in whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning?

Prayer:

Help me, Holy Spirit, to resist the offers of Satan and to discern and receive the good and perfect gifts of the Lord.
