“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.”
– Colossians 1:13 (NIV)
A lot of people do not understand how authority and power work. The fact is that authority speaks of the jurisdiction within which one can enforce their power. The President of Nigeria, no matter how powerful, does not have the jurisdiction to order the arrest of someone in Zambia. In the same way, the power of Satan is only in the kingdom of darkness. However, some believers still fall prey to the oppression of the devil because he deceives them.
Just like any evil person, the devil does not mind extending his oppression beyond boundaries as long as people allow him. Simply put, if you as a believer give place to the devil, he will take it. Hence, Paul tells us to give no place to him. Whatever little place you give, he will try to utilize it. Sometimes, believers give him a place through ignorance of their authority in Christ. Don’t forget that ignorance is typified as darkness just as knowledge is typified as light. So ignorance can be a foothold for the devil in a believer’s life.
Another foothold is sin. A continuous life of sin can give the devil a place in the life of believers. If you don’t want to see the power of Satan, first, you must not be in his jurisdiction. In other words, you must be born again. But even after that, if you don’t want the power of Satan to work on you, you must renew your mind by God’s word and refuse to be ignorant.
Also, you must walk in the light and not in the dark. When you walk in darkness, you allow Satan to harm you. When you walk in the light and have the light of the word, you become a danger to Satan. This does not mean he will not still plot against you, but he will never triumph over you.
PRAYER:
Holy Spirit, help me to walk in the light of the word so that I will triumph over all the powers of darkness.
