“(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.” — Romans 4:17 (KJV)
Several times in the scriptures, we find God speaking in the past tense about events that are yet to happen. Our anchor text provides the case of Abraham as an example, where God referred to things “that be not as though they were.” God told Abraham, “I have made thee a father of many nations.” This is clearly past-tense language, yet the reality was that Abraham didn’t even have any child.
There are many other cases in the scriptures where, before King David went into battle, God would say He had given him victory over the enemies. This should inform us on how to relate with God in faith. There are things the scriptures say about us that we may not yet be walking in. There are authentic prophecies we may have received and may not yet be seeing the manifestation of. There really is no cause for alarm, and we must not doubt His word. We must, like Abraham, not stagger at the promises of God.
It is important to even imitate the language of God in such situations. If God says He has given you something, it would help your faith to say the same thing God has said. It is not mere positive talk; it is speaking by faith the very same thing that God has said about you. It is important to always say to yourself, “I am who God says I am.” Refuse the report of the devil. Refuse the report of the circumstances. Hold on to the report of the Lord. We will indeed reap in due season, if we faint not. (Galatians 6:9)
PRAYER:
Help me, Lord, to build my trust in Your word so I can see things from Your perspective. Amen.
