“There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.”
– Proverbs 11:24-25 (KJV)
In our anchor text today, King Solomon highlights a powerful paradox: those who are generous continue to increase, while those who hoard selfishly remain in lack. This is a divine principle that God has established because He designed us to be generous toward one another. It is not His will for us to live selfishly or cling to wealth for personal gain alone.
Interestingly, Solomon says, “withholdeth more than is meet.” This means God does not call us to be reckless with our resources. Saving is wise and encouraged. However, when we exclude generosity from our lives, we become like a pipe that refuses to let water flow through—eventually, that pipe will burst. Likewise, greed leads to both spiritual and material stagnation.
God’s will is for us to be wise stewards of the resources He has given us. We are called to save, but also to be compassionate toward those in need. Proverbs 19:17 reminds us, “Whoever gives to the poor lends to the Lord.” And God, being faithful, never fails to reward generosity. Even if we do not see the full reward in this life, we will receive it abundantly in eternity.
I encourage you today to cultivate a heart of generosity. Do not let the love of money control you. When you give freely, you will experience God’s peace, provision, and blessings in ways beyond your imagination.
“One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
– Proverbs 11:24-25 (NIV)
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to have a generous heart and not be greedy or selfish. Teach me to trust You as I give, knowing that You are my provider. Amen.
