“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,”
— Ephesians 1:18 (NIV)
A lot of times, people are not 100 percent clear about what the Bible teaches is our inheritance in Christ. And this is very crucial. People tend to mention many different things that are part of our inheritance but are not exactly what it is. When we study the Scriptures, we realize God calls us believers a royal priesthood. We are a kingdom of priests, the Bible says. This is particularly deliberate because, in the Old Testament, out of the 12 tribes of Israel, only one was chosen as a priestly tribe—the Levites.
Therefore, when the Lord began to share an inheritance among all the tribes, He gave no earthly inheritance to the tribe of Levi, saying that He Himself is their inheritance since they have been consecrated to serve and worship Him alone.
“That is why the Levites have no share or inheritance among their fellow Israelites; the Lord is their inheritance, as the Lord your God told them.”
— Deuteronomy 10:9 (NIV)
“I am to be the only inheritance the priests have. You are to give them no possession in Israel; I will be their possession.”
— Ezekiel 44:28 (NIV)
This is repeated over and over again in the Old Testament, and it was also a type and shadow for us. In the New Covenant, we, the kingdom of priests, now have an eternal inheritance. This inheritance is the LORD Himself. Ultimately, it is in the promise of spending our eternity with Him. But even now, we have this inheritance in the fact that He now dwells in us. Hallelujah! What a heritage.
This is why we call the fruits of the Spirit, gifts of the Spirit, etc., our inheritance in Christ. However, those are only parts and benefits of the Spirit being with us. The Spirit is the real inheritance for us. So, just like the Levites, our inheritance in Christ is nothing material. This is because God does not want us to be too attached to this world. Our real inheritance is Him. He is our portion, our lot, and our inheritance in the land of the living and even for eternity. Glory to God.

PRAYER
Thank you, Father, for giving us Yourself as our eternal inheritance. Thank you for giving us Your Holy Spirit as the foretaste and earnest of our inheritance.
