God Uses the Available

Discipleship Devotional, March 18th, 2025

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!'”
— Isaiah 6:8 (NIV)

The God of the Bible is sovereign, and in His sovereignty, He has chosen not to override the choice and will of people. This is why, even in salvation, we have a choice either to accept or reject Him. This is the same in how God fulfills His will and purposes on the earth. He looks for someone whose heart is available to Him, and He uses that person. This is like when He told Samuel that He had found David. God decided to use David because He knew that David was available.

In the same way, God testified about Abraham, saying, “I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him.” This is because God had seen his heart—that he was ready to obey God in all things. This is the example we are to follow. When we speak about availability, it has to be something that proceeds from the heart first. When we make ourselves available to God genuinely, He uses us for His glory. No matter how gifted you are, if you don’t make yourself available, God cannot use you.

When the Lord Jesus walked the earth in His earthly ministry, most of the people who made themselves available to Him were not from the wealthiest backgrounds. But He went ahead and used them mightily. We must never shy away from making ourselves available to God. The truth is that He uses those whose hearts are available to Him.

“For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.”
— 2 Chronicles 16:9a (NIV)

Prayer
Holy Spirit, help my heart to yearn after God more and more. Help me to make myself available for the Master’s use.
