“How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.”
– Psalms 119:9 (NIV)
In our anchor text, the psalmist asks an important question and answers it for our benefit. How really can a young person walk in purity? The answer is by living according to the word of God. There is no other way to do this. No matter how well-meaning we are, our fleshly disposition is to revolt against the will of God. This is why, as young people, we must allow the word of God to dominate our thoughts. Two verses after our anchor text, the psalmist said:
“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
– Psalms 119:11 (NIV)
He went on to emphasize that it is by hiding God’s word in our hearts that we walk in this purity. We live in a spiritual warzone. God wants us to have His word in our hearts because that would be beneficial for us; Satan also wants to pump his ideologies into our hearts to destroy us. It is therefore our responsibility to take heed of what we allow to dominate our hearts.
We ought to study God’s word and internalize it into our consciousness. We are called to meditate upon His word day and night. We are called to give ourselves entirely to it, knowing that our profit will be visible to all. In the same way, if we internalize Satan’s ideologies and give ourselves entirely to them, our loss will also be visible to all. We must therefore choose wisely.
“Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.”
– 1 Timothy 4:15 (KJV)
Prayer:
Help me, Heavenly Father, to give myself completely to Your word. Help me to study and meditate on Your word so I can walk in Your statutes. Amen!
