Be Sober, Be Vigilant

Discipleship Devotional, April 8th, 2025

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
1st Peter 5:8 (KJV)

We are at war with the kingdom of darkness for the souls of men. This is why the Bible says we should put on the whole armor of God. This tells us that when we believed and received Christ into our lives, we were also enlisted into His army. Therefore, as a soldier on the war front, we must be vigilant and watchful. Scripture admonishes us to be vigilant because we have an adversary who seeks to devour us. We are not to be afraid of him; rather, we must not be ignorant of his tricks.

The devil’s master strategy is deception and trickery. Hence, we must be watchful like a vigilante group. We must not go into spiritual slumber, lest the devil come and sow tares in our vineyard.

But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.
Matthew 13:25 (KJV)

The way to keep awake and watchful in the spirit is by keeping your fervor burning for Christ. We must never lag in zeal. We must never tire in prayer. We must never get tired of reaching out to the lost. We must never get carried away by the things of the world. We must never fall for the trickery and deception of Satan. This is what Paul warned Timothy about:

Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
2nd Timothy 2:3-4 (KJV)

Prayer

Holy Spirit, strengthen me to always be watchful and vigilant. Thank you, Father.
