Discipleship Devotional, April 11th, 2025
I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things, I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
– Philippians 4:12-13 (NKJV)
The apostle says that he had learned how to live abased and how to live abound. That means he has learned how to cope when he was in lack and when he was in plenty. Hence, he said he can do all things. That meant he can survive in any circumstances. He had learned how not to let lack or plenty affect his walk with God. This message is very important for believers worldwide now, and particularly for African believers. If your Christianity is all about a life of comfort, you would soon curse God when things get tough. Believers need to know that God has called us to be consistent in season and out of season. People need to realize that faith in Christ is not all about material prosperity.
The NIV translation says:
“I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
– Philippians 4:12-13 (NIV)
You reading this today, if you see that you have begun to doubt the existence of God because of the times, maybe you should check the kind of Christianity you’ve been practicing. God will provide for your needs in this period. He will miraculously supply your needs. But you must come to a point where, like the three Hebrew boys, you can say, “even if He doesn’t, we will not bow down.” Learn to serve God not just for the things He can give, but for who He is. That said, I pray for you that my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Amen!
Prayer
Train me, Lord, to know how to be abased and how to abound. Train me to be consistent regardless of life’s circumstances.
