Discipleship Devotional, April 17th, 2025
Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
– 1 Corinthians 10:12
In our Christian walk, we are always admonished to be on guard, to take heed and never to become complacent, trusting in ourselves. Our anchor text says that if anyone thinks he/she is standing, they should take heed lest they fall. We are engaged in a warfare in which our adversary, the devil, moves from place to place seeking opportunities to cause men to fall. The prophet Amos spoke woe to the Israelites who had become complacent in Zion:
Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!
– Amos 6:1 (KJV)
Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria, you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the people of Israel come!
– Amos 6:1 (NIV)
Jesus always admonished us to keep our watch and to be on our guard. When we are standing firm is the best time to watch and take heed for any way Satan may want to cause us to fall. This is just as times of peace are the best time to prepare for war. We are in Zion, but God has not called us to be at ease—that is, to become complacent. We must continually take heed to stand firm in the faith.
How does this work practically? This means you must study the Word of God again and again, even if you think you are having a rich spiritual walk. You must pray with urgency even if you are having a great prayer life. You must keep your spiritual devotions desperately. Don’t come to a point where you are overcompensating. Don’t say because you fasted or prayed, you can just go ahead and start binge-watching movies and series.
Maintain your spiritual atmosphere. Find ways of relaxing and refreshing that don’t cause spiritual leakage and exposure to you. Don’t forget, we must always be spiritually awake because it is when men sleep spiritually that the enemy comes to sow tares. We are permitted to sleep physically to be refreshed, but we cannot afford to sleep spiritually. I pray that today’s message will strike a chord in your heart. Amen!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me never to trust in myself. Help me to always keep my watch and take heed to myself. Amen.
