The Discipline of Bible Study

Discipleship Devotional, May 16th, 2025

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”
Joshua 1:8 (NIV)

Many believers fail to realize that the Bible should be studied diligently with the purpose of gaining true understanding. Some view it as merely a source of daily inspiration, leading them to base their Christian lives on “verse of the day” practices. While such verses can be uplifting, building a strong foundation for one’s Christian journey requires more than just taking in one verse a day. It’s akin to expecting a child to grow strong with just a spoonful of baby food daily—this approach will inevitably lead to spiritual malnourishment.

While the Bible certainly offers inspiration, its true value is unlocked through thorough study. In ancient Jewish tradition, children were trained to memorize entire scriptures, deeply embedding the Word of God in their hearts and minds. This tradition carried over to the early church, reflecting God’s desire for us to immerse ourselves in His Word, meditating on it day and night.

Relying on a single daily quote is not sufficient to face the trials and challenges of life. God wants us to be saturated with His Word, rooted in His truth, and filled with unwavering faith in Him. This consistent and in-depth approach to Bible study is what equips us to overcome the obstacles and tribulations of life.

“The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.”
Psalm 19:7-8 (NIV)

Prayer:

Thank you, Father, for Your Word. Help me to diligently study it daily and to grow in understanding. Amen.
