“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”— Colossians 3:1–2 (KJV)
If we are to live victorious Christian lives, we must be intentional about where we set our hearts and minds. Whatever occupies your thoughts will eventually shape your desires and decisions. That’s why our anchor text admonishes us to set our affection on things above, not on earthly things.
Jesus also spoke about this principle when He said:
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21 (NIV)
He instructed us not to store up treasures on earth—where they can decay or be stolen—but to lay up treasures in heaven. The condition of your heart is tied to what you value most. So ask yourself today: what do I truly treasure? The temporary pleasures of this world? Or the eternal riches of God?
It doesn’t happen by accident. If you’re careless about what you let into your heart and mind, the world will subtly shift your focus away from Christ. That’s why scripture repeatedly instructs us to guard and direct our minds intentionally.
Peter puts it this way:
“So brace up your minds; be sober (morally alert); set your hope wholly and unchangeably on the grace that is coming to you when Jesus Christ is revealed.” — 1 Peter 1:13 (AMP)
We are called to brace up our minds—to actively guard them and fix them in the right direction. You can deliberately choose to delight yourself in the Lord and treasure His eternal kingdom above the fleeting pleasures of this life.
This morning, the Lord calls you to shift your focus—to delight yourself in the eternal treasures of heaven rather than the passing distractions of the world.
Prayer:
Holy Spirit, help me to set my affection on Christ and not on the things of this world. Strengthen me to lay up my treasures in heaven so that my heart is fixed on eternal realities. Amen.
