Walking in Self-Control

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
Galatians 5:22–23 (KJV)

One of the most important virtues needed to succeed in any area of life is self-control. For the believer, this is more than just a virtue—it is a fruit of the Spirit. What a privilege to know that the Holy Spirit within us empowers us to live a disciplined life!

Where there is no self-control, there’s no telling how far a person can fall or fail in life. Today’s devotional focuses on exercising self-control over your appetites, over your time, and over your choices—choosing to do what needs to be done at the right time, and not giving in to procrastination or impulsive desires.

A lack of self-control often leads people to chase immediate gratification at the expense of more important, long-term goals. For example, it takes discipline for a student to study when others are out playing. The difference between success and failure often lies here. Self-discipline enables you to put in the necessary work when it counts.

Even some unbelievers can be capable of self-control through sheer willpower. But for us as believers, we have an advantage—the Spirit of God within us has already produced this fruit in our hearts. You don’t have to strive in your own strength. Self-control comes easier when you yield to the Spirit and walk in Him. Take advantage of this gift today!

It is crucial to begin cultivating this discipline now—learning to govern your appetites, manage your impulses, and use your words wisely. You can tame your desires and live above the flesh through the Spirit. Self-control is not just an advantage over sin; it is your advantage in life.

Live today through your Spirit, and let His fruit shine in your daily decisions.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for giving me Your Spirit and His fruit within me. Help me to walk in self-control and discipline in every area of my life. From today onward, I choose to live through Your Spirit and take advantage of His power in me. Amen.
